Learning the art of big wave surfing is not as easy as people think. As with anything that you take seriously, it is more than just a hobby and will require thousands of hours of good practice. Physical strength and endurance
It’s no good even bothering to try if you are not physically fit. You can keep surfing small waves (3-6 feet) in more beginner-oriented areas just to keep practicing while you are gaining body strength, but you should really get yourself to a gym regularly and do the work required to build those muscles. And we’re not talking about those pansy “muscle toning” exercises that all the broscience kids tell you about — do squats, dead lifts, chin ups and bench presses. Aim to be able to lift your own body weight times two. When you wake up in the morning, 50 pushups is how you start the day. On days when you work out, don’t surf. Don’t surf the next day either, let your body rest and rebuild itself. Maybe do a light swim or surf in the evening that day. Next morning, get out there as early as you can and surf until the sun goes down.
Motor skills and mental reaction time
Mountain biking, trail running and parkour are all sports that are highly recommended for surfers to do at least once a week, instead of a workout in the gym. This is because to be a good surfer, you also need to develop your motor skills and reaction time. These sports allow you to make quick decisions as you navigate challenging obstacles and can be a great asset to anyone who wants to take up wave surfing.
